TikTok Content Creators Driving Parallel Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, based on new investigations.

Investigational Treatment Acquiring Traction Via Social Media

Retatrutide, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to contact these profiles directly for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison images, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Vendors market the drug there before directing buyers to other platforms for transactions.

Learning About Retatrutide

This medication is an investigational injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could help patients reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Express Concerns

However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in individuals injecting products of uncertain source.

Some professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Implementation

Selling the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several content creators attempt to circumvent the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but advertising and supply can still violate medicines, marketing, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.

Service Reaction and Content Elimination

According to TikTok, the platform has taken down violative content and prohibited related hashtags and query recommendations. The organization stated it was dedicated to keeping the platform secure and investing in enhancing compliance measures.

Online Trading Operations

Investigations also discovered groups with up to nine thousand members marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up channels with thousands of users, filled with photos of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at home.

After moments of entering one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases take place. The seller sent an instruction manual and promised delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Item Details and Pricing

Within these groups, messages show black plastic parcels with Royal Mail labels, stating to include new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens usually priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a injector should last, sellers give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Safety Actions

A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly monitored harmful content on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Warnings

“People are injecting materials they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online versions may not include what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to current cost increases for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are turning to social media. But fake injections are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has already encountered individuals harmed by personal administration from unverified sources. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet approved … may subject users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
