As any significant honors show draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of followers with niche passions.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
