Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
