This Satirical Thriller
Coralie Fargeat's unflinching commentary tackles the demanding standards for women's appearance and the feared consequences of ageing. The veteran actress delivers a masterful portrayal as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress reduced to starring in a workout series on the small screen. Pushed out by her slimy boss her manager Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and gruesome treatment titled "The Substance". Presence Film
The acclaimed director tests his film-making abilities with this nifty paranormal narrative shot entirely from the perspective of a ghost. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their recent residence, the camera – AKA the Presence – follows them around. The daughter appears aware of the supernatural presence, and the entity appears guarding her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Nicolas Cage embraces his eccentric image via this self-referential adventure. He portrays a self-obsessed Hollywood actor named Nicolas Cage who takes on a million-dollar gig to appear at a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by the intelligence agency to investigate the suspected cartel boss, the actor's unconventional method comes in handy. This Saturday, 9pm, on Channel 4
The Black Phone Horror
Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well despite the lack of a sequel. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has rendered the children anxious. Once Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and held captive in a dungeon, he anticipates the worst. But the old telephone in the room repeatedly calls, with spooky callers offering help, and the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for Mammon in this director's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation regarding the shamed religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield plays the venal Jim, who states initially, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals set about capitalizing on the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of bad interior design, bad makeup and bad faith, yet Jessica Chastain manages to present the real-life figure in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, on Film4
Black Bag
