Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a military coup in September and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.
This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, causing him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
He was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.
The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
